Tirzepatide is a peptide originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and now used for weight loss.
After 36 weeks of open-label maximum tolerated dose of tirzepatide, adults with obesity or overweight (without diabetes) experienced a mean weight reduction of 20.9%.
From randomization (at week 36), those switched to placebo experienced a 14% weight regain and those continuing tirzepatide experienced an additional 5.5% weight reduction during the 52-week double-blind period.
How It Works
Tirzepatide is a first-in-class, once-weekly injectable medication that acts as a dual agonist for both the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors.
By activating these hormone receptors, it:
- Stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin in a glucose-dependent manner.
- Decreases the amount of sugar the liver produces.
- Slows down gastric emptying (digestion) and suppresses appetite, leading to reduced food intake and weight loss.
